LCD & DLP Projector FAQ

How easy is it to use my projector for multimedia presentations?
From a hardware point of view it is easy. Most LCD projectors can switch between video and computer signals very quickly, so the answer really depends on the complexity of your presentation. You might not need to do any more than connect a few cables to the Audio Video inputs and connect the laptop using the supplied 15 Pin D-sub cable. It is important to rehearse your presentations using all your presentation tools and then it is only a matter of switching between the sources.

Can I show high resolution images from a low-resolution projector?
Many LCD projectors can compress higher resolution computer displays to their native display resolution. Optoma projectors having the E-Z zoom feature enables this feature to be activated. There is however a caution, detailed text information may lose a few characters when data is compressed. Still photographs, animations and some technical illustrations may hold up well when reduced. The key is the degree of reduction. Images that are Re-mapped from 1024 x768 sources will not look as good at 640 x 480 as they will look at 800 x 600.

Will my projector supports the different video standards?
Yes the signal processing capabilities of today's LCD projectors support the North American System NTSC, the European System PAL and certain versions of SECAM. Optoma projectors support NTSC, PAL and SECAM.

What kind of cables will I need to use with my LCD projector?
For most presentations you'll need a computer display cable (RGB 15 Pin D-sub), video cable and an audio cable to carry the sound in your presentation. All Optoma data projectors are sold with the above cables as standard. Optoma data projectors also come supplied with a remote infrared mouse control, to use this feature, the remote control must be connected to the mouse "IN" socket on your projector from your serial socket output on your computer. By connecting this cable, you can use the Projectors remote control to control your PC mouse during your presentations.

I use a Macintosh computer, how do I get my projector to work?
Macintosh display cards are compatible with most data projectors, because of the way they are designed, you may need a special type of adaptor, most Macintosh displays use a 15-pin plug with 2 rows of pins (15 pin VGA plugs have 3 rows of pins). All Optoma projectors come supplied with the Macintosh adaptor to enable easy connection with the supplied computer cable.

Are there any practical accessories I might need for my LCD projector?
This depends on how you plan to move your projector around. It is possible to buy a soft carry bag for general transportation requirements however if constant transportation is required it may be more feasible to get a custom hard case (road case) a second computer cable may be handy to loop your projector back (RGB OUT) to an external monitor for professional looking presentations

Do I need to carry a spare Globe or lamp?
Most projectors sold these days come installed with Metal Halide Lamps .The nature of this technology does not require you to carry a spare lamp. Usually after time the brightness intensity will drop as the lamp gets older, it is only then that the lamp may need changing. All Optoma projectors come supplied with a handy lamp usage counter, generally after about 2000 Hrs or approximately 5 years (based on the machine being used 8Hrs Per week X 50 weeks) the lamp may need changing, Optoma Service Center can supply replacement lamps if needed.

What about the Audio, do I need external speakers and can I add external speakers?
Most Optoma projectors come supplied with on board sound capabilities (sound amplifier) however if you require a Higher quality sound, connecting a set a audio cables to the audio out on the projector to an external Amplifier will give you a bigger sound through its speakers. For most portable presentations the Amplifier built into the projector is more than adequate to satisfy most audiences.

Can I control my Projector in the dark?
Yes, all Optoma projectors come supplied with a back lit remote control that enables the user to operate the remote in dark situations. Optoma models also come supplied with on screen menu display functions which brings up in bright detail all operations of the machine on your projector screen

Can I use the projector as a rear projection display?
Usually to rear project an image the projector should be capable of reversing the image. Most models can perform this function using the invert/reverse function located in the on screen menu. Rear projection allows the user to hide the projection device behind the screen.
